Tuition fees in 35 schools in Western Visayas will increase by an average of 10.78 percent when classes open in June, a report from the Commission on Higher Education said yesterday.

The average increase in terms of pesos is P28.19 per unit, the report prepared by Freddie Maningo of the CHED regional office said.

Only 35 private higher education institutions in Western Visayas out of 72, or 49 percent increased their tuition fees, the report added.

2 guvs fear security vacuum
with pullout of 66th IB

DUMAGUETE CITY -- The pull-out of the Army's 66th Infantry Battalion soldiers in Negros island yesterday elicited apprehensions over the creation of security vacuum areas from Governors Joseph Maraņon of Negros Occidental and George Arnaiz of Oriental.

Maraņon said he will ask for an assessment from Col. Victor Ibrado and Senior Supt. Vicente Ponteras of the redeployment of 66th IB outside Negros.

Arnaiz also echoed similar security concerns as those raised by Maraņon.

Dizon to head CHED

De La Salle University president Bro. Rolando Dizon will assume the chairmanship of the Commission on Higher Education tomorrow.

Dizon, who hails from Bacolod City, will be sworn in by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the new De La Salle University Canlubang campus on the day he ends his five-year tenure as DLSU System president.

Interestingly, Dizon replaces Western Visayan Esther Garcia, who is from Antique. Garcia succeeded former Silliman University president and ex-Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Angel Alcala, who is from Cauayan, Negros Occidental.
