Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena distributed 153 gilts and five high-breed boars to associations and breeding centers from six cities and seven towns in the province at the Capitol yesterday.
The recipients are from the cities of Sagay, Cadiz, Silay, Talisay, Bago and Himamaylan and the towns of Manapla, Valladolid, San Enrique, La Castellana, Cauayan and Hinoba-an.
Decena said the gilts and the boars were purchased from the Philippine Pig Improvement Company in Davao as part of Negros Occidental’s Provincial Animal Genetic Improvement Program on swine, an initiative in partnership with the commercial hog breeders that helps conceptualized the swine genetic improvement since 2007.
Under the program, the infusion of parent stock gilts and boars from recognized and registered nucleus farms from the Bureau of Animal Industry to organized backyard and semi-commercial hog raisers affiliated with the Alliance of Hog Raisers Association of Negros Occidental is allowed.
Decena said the program aims to provide pure breed parent stock gilts and boars to backyard raisers to upgrade the genetic makeup of the existing local breeds, generate livelihood project to augment family income, develop skills of backyard raisers in swine raising, and improve meat quality. These, in turn, will increase market value and answer the increasing demand on meat production, Decena said.
He said the program is also in support of the food security thrust of the Negros First Development Agenda of Marañon.
Decena also said the beneficiaries will sign a contract upon receipt of the animal and will pay them back with four heads of female piglets during the first farrowing to be re-dispersed to the next line of beneficiaries.*APN
