Ma, child found dead
From hanging, slashed wrists
BY SHIELA GELERA

A woman and her 3-year-old daughter were found dead in a room at a pension house, at 11th Street in Bacolod City, at about noon yesterday.

The fatalities were identified by their relatives as Lea Cañete, 34, and Hannah Kate Cañete, 3, of Murcia town in Negros Occidental.

Hannah Kate, who had been slashed on both of her wrists, was found already lifeless on a bed, bathed in her own blood, Senior Police Officer 3 Arlene Torrendon, deputy chief of the Bacolod Police Office Women and Children's Complaints Desk, said.

Meanwhile, in the toilet area of the room, Lea was found hanging with a nylon rope tied around her neck, and the other end attached to the shower curtain rod, with a towel in her mouth, Torrendon said.

The Negros Occidental Scene of the Crime Operatives, who processed the crime scene, recovered a razor blade, a nylon rope and a towel. No suicide note was found in the room, Chief Insp. Ramonit Javier, head of the SOCO and PNP Crime Laboratory, said.

The bodies of Lea and Hannah Kate were discovered by a room boy identified only as Froilan, at about 12:30 p.m.

Insp. Stephen Boniba, Station 2 chief, said only the mother and her daughter checked in at the hotel, at about 6:40 p.m. Thursday, and at about 9 p.m. personnel of the pension house allegedly heard the minor cry.

Torrendon said that, initially, they suspected suicide in the incident but the cadavers will be subjected to an autopsy to determine the cause of their deaths.

The police will check the closed-circuit television camera of the establishment to see whether it was Lea who had slashed the wrists of her daughter, Torrendon said.

Marialuz Segubia, 51, the mother of Lea, said that her daughter had been suffering from a nervous breakdown and she had some personal problems. Lea and Hannah Kate had just picked up P3,000 in cash from a money courier, that her husband, Joebert, had sent them, Thursday.

The bodies were brought to the Abe Funeral Homes in Bacolod.*SGG
