Visayas insurgency-free
by 2016 – Centcom chief

Maj. Gen. Nicanor Vibar, commander of the Central Command, or Centom, of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said he aims to declare the entire Visayas as insurgency-free by 2016, a government press release said.

The Centcom has jurisdiction over regions 6, 7 and 8 in the Visayas.

Vibar said that when he assumed as new Centcom commander, 11 out of 16 provinces in the Visayas have already been cleared. He said only five provinces are left for him to clear by 2016.

Injured soldier honored

Maj. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero, 3rd Infantry Division commander, said yesterday that there will be no let-up in their security operations against those who continue to pursue armed violence.

Guerrero, who awarded the Wounded Personnel Medal to PFC Ronald Apiladas Saturday, said “We will ensure that development efforts will reach the barangays unhampered by these lawless elements.” He was apparently referring to the NPA.

Apiladas was injured in an encounter with suspected NPA rebels on Sept. 19, in Tubungan town of Iloilo.

Anti-smoking drive
to be intensified

Dumaguete City’s smoke-free enforcers and Task Force Sagar personnel were ordered to remove advertisements promoting all brands of cigarets in its jurisdiction as part of an all-out campaign to enforce the ordinance on anti-smoking.

City Administrator and Task Force Sagarr ground commander, William Ablong, said Operation Baklas had been enforced after the ordinance’ enforcement, including in the barangay level. This time, it will be replaced with an information and education campaign materials on the ill-effects of smoking, in partnership with Smart Communications which provided the IEC materials, he added.

In the second year of implementation of the anti-smoking ordinance, all 30 barangay captains of Dumaguete were invited to a smoke-free symposium in two batches, and to other activities next week.
