Seven delegations will see action in the inaugural Negros Island Region Athletic Association Meet.
These are Negros Occidental and the contingents of the Divisions of Bais, Bayawan, Dumaguete Guijulngan and Tanjay cities and of Negros Oriental.
Dr. Gilbert Sadsad, NIR interim director of the Department of Education, said the participation of the seven delegations was finalized in the Jan. 8 conference of the Regional Sports Council held in Dumaguete City.
The NIRAA Meet will be held at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City on Feb. 8-12.
Winners will represent Region 18 in the Palarong Pambansa scheduled in Legazpi City.
Dr. Sadsad explained that Negros Oriental participation was based on previous regional meets when the province was still under Central Visayas. The Negros Occidental contingent selects its regional meet-bound athletes in the Provincial Meet, participated in by 10 areas, which was held last month.
Dr. Sadsad said the Regional Sports Council will have to agree on the basis of participation next year but in the meantime, it will be based on the previous system.
The regional director also said that school sports supervisors in both provinces will meet in Bacolod City tomorrow to discuss the screening of athletes and accreditation for the February meet.
Dr. Sadsad confirmed to DAILY STAR that the Negros Occidental hosting will entail a P5-million budget in addition to the P10.5 million for the delegation of the province.
Negros Occidental has provided the major spark in the perennial Top Three finish of Western Visayas in the Palarong Pambansa.*
