Negros Island Region lacks 4,076 police personnel to meet the minimum police-to- population ratio of one policeman for every 500 population.

At present, the Police Regional Office 18 has a manpower strength of 3,947, compared to the authorized strength of 8,023 police personnel, based on the population of Negros island.

This prompted the Regional Advisory Council for Police Transformation and Development, chaired by former Bacolod Mayor Luzviminda Valdez, to pass a resolution yesterday seeking for the increase of quota in the recruitment of neophyte police officers for PRO 18.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office of Dumaguete City will step up efforts to curb mendicancy as they started taking Badjaos off the streets for profiling and orientation on anti-mendicancy laws.

CSWDO chief Carola Alquero said yesterday that more than 25 Badjaos, including adults and children, were rounded up Monday and brought to the CSWDO where they were fed and documented.

The Badjaos are a nomad tribe who primarily live off the streets, begging for money and food and bringing their young children, even infants, with them.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Negros Island Region director, Al Orolfo, said yesterday that the agency is now deliberating on a scheme involving families in helping government restore forest cover in the country.

Orolfo said a workshop among DENR regional directors is scheduled within this week to further discuss the salient features and other essential points of the new program.

He said this was among the discussions during the national gathering of DENR regional directors in Dauin, Negros Oriental, last week.
