Bacolod City, Philippines Thursday, January 12, 2017

Shining, shimmering, splendid

It was a drizzling afternoon about 21 kilometers from Bacolod City. The main highway was closed and traffic flow was diverted towards the main streets within the City of Bago, where heritage houses can be found near the public plaza, a tricycle is the mode of transportation, and people were busy on New Year's day.

This was no ordinary night for the city as the 10th Lights of Bago was held; this is a display of artistic creations as pyrotechnics burst in the sky and look like stars shining brightly. This was a total package of fireworks display synchronized with music inspired by the king of pop, Michael Jackson, as the theme for this year's event is “Heal the World”.

Every time I see a fireworks display, it reminds me of then Governor Joseph Marañon. He made mention one day that we will visit the Hong Kong Disneyland where a fireworks display is held at night by the castle of sleeping beauty. Eventually, my family was able to visit the theme park, and it was magical as the lights burst in different designs like glitter palm, strobe, peony, brocade, crackle, phoenix and birds, the fan, fountain, wagon wheels, waterfall, rings; it was indeed shining, shimmering, splendid while we were listening to Alladin's A Whole New World while looking up the bright sky.

This time though, we need not travel abroad to enjoy one, even here in our island a fireworks display is part of the festivals as a celebration of healing and oneness like the one in Bago City. Now on its sixth year as a photo competition, Bago City has a weeklong photo exhibit at Robinsons Place Bacolod. The competition of the best photos taken is in two categories: conventional, with the use of DSLR or digital single-lens reflex camera, and mobile, for those using smart phones or tablets.

The winners will be known on January 15, after all the photos are judged based on visual impact, exposure, creativity and composition. A special award for the most popular photo will also be awarded.

For those who would like to open a travel agency business, a travel agency operations seminar will be held February 1-3, at the Kaisa Angelo King Heritage Center in Intramuros, Manila. Seminar fee is P9,500, to include handouts, lunch, snacks and certificate of completion. Accredited by the DOT, this is organized by the Asia Pacific Tourism Training Institute.*
