There were 4,273 security personnel from 21 government agencies officially deployed yesterday for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations 2017 Summit meetings in Bacolod City and neighboring areas, starting today until Friday.
Policemen, soldiers, firefighters, coast guards, state security personnel, and the augmentation forces, with their service vehicles, K-9 dogs, and armorsfilled the Bacolod Government Center grounds at the send-off rites yesterday.
Helicopters also flew over the BCG grounds during the program.
The personnel are assigned at the billeting areas, airport, malls and some on the road security for the local and foreign delegates and other guests of the ASEAN meetings.
Chief Supt. Renato Gumban, acting director of Police Regional Office-18 in Negros Island, the Task Group Bacolod head, said they are ready to provide security for the city's hosting of the ASEAN.
The security personnel were downloaded from the Bacolod City Police Office, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental police provincial offices, police national support units, Special Action Forces, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Mobile Highway Patrol Group, PRO-6, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, and the Philippine National Police in Camp Crame.
Of the 4,273 personnel, Gumban said 2,000 were already mobilized two weeks before the ASEAN meeting.
Gumban, is confident that the forces and resources can ensure the safety and security of ASEAN delegates, and told the security personnel to perform their assigned tasks efficiently. He also urged them to make the convention an incident-free one.
Bacolod Mayor EvelioLeonardia, meanwhile, appealed to the uniformed personnel to make sure that the event, which he consider “historic”, should be peaceful by doing things right.
Leonardia said each one has a role to play and he hopesthat everyone will have a sense of mission and fulfillment to perform their responsibilities.
He also thanked the National Organizing Committee for giving Bacolod the privilege and honor of hosting the ASEAN meeting this year.
At the ceremony, the flags of ASEAN and 10-member-countries Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Brunei, were hoisted.
BacolodVice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, councilors EmAng and Cindy Rojas, City Administrator John Orola,Chief Supt. Nestor Bergonia, retired Chief Supt. Josephus Angan, assistant deputy director general for tourism and special events services Angela Javier-all of the ASEAN-National Organizing Council, and Office of the Civil Defense-NIR OIC Director Ma. AlethaNograwere also present.
The Presidential Communications Operations Office said in a press release that about 50 senior officials and other delegates will attend the 15th Meeting for ASEAN Senior Officials Responsible for Information at the SMX Convention Center Bacolod on March 22 to 23.*GPB/SGG
