CHR, PNP rescue rape victim

Personnel of the Commission on Human Rights in Negros Oriental and the Provincial Intelligence Bureau of the Philippine National Police yesterday rescued a 17-year old girl, who was repeatedly raped allegedly by her father for about 10 years now.

CHR-Negros Oriental chief and special investigator, Jess Cañete, said the girl is now in his custody and is being subjected to medico-legal examination, in support of the filing of charges against her father.

The rescue of the girl and the arrest of the father in Barangay Basak, Zamboanguita came after the CHR received information about the girl's plight yesterday morning from a tipster.

Chief Inspector Julius Garcia, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Negros Oriental, vehemently denied extortion allegations, saying that somebody was bringing the name of the CIDG in their extortion activities, especially in beerhouses and karaoke bars.

He would have wanted concerned businesses to come to the CIDG office to clarify things, in view of the fact that in several instances, the name of the CIDG was dragged by unscrupulous individuals in their solicitation activities.

At one instance, the name of the CIDG regional director was also used in solicitation activities, Garcia said. .
