The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board has already approved the wage increase of “kasambahay” or house helpers in Western Visayas, General Alliance of Workers Association secretary-general Wennie Sancho, who sits in the RTWPB, said yesterday.
Sancho also said they approved the increase Nov. 6 during their RTWPB meeting in Iloilo and it has already been endorsed to the National Wages and Productivity Board.
However, the details on how much the increase is will only be released if the NWPB approves it, Sancho said.
“The wage increase is substantial and it will be an early Christmas gift for the “kasambahays” if approved,” Sancho said, adding that they hope the increase will be officially announced early December.
The RTWPB is chaired by Department of Labor and Employment-Western Visayas director Johnson Cañete.
A public hearing was called to look into the situation of the kasambahays' wages and whether to increase it or not, in October. It was attended by the RTWPB members of Western Visayas, representatives of local labor association, and employers.
Cañete said there was no petition to increase the wages of the “kasambahay”, however, they need to review them to find out if there is a clamor for an increase or not.
He also assured Negrense laborers that they have nothing to worry about their labor concerns despite the dissolution of the short-lived Negros Island Region, as no RTWPB was created during its operations. *MLG
