Monitor school bullying,
Sanggunian asks DepEd
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

A resolution requesting the Department of Education through the Office of Mayor EvelioLeonardia to monitor incidents of bullying at school and to strictly implement policies of the Anti-Bullying Ordinance of Bacolod City, was recently approved by the Bacolod SangguniangPanlungsod.

The resolution authored by Councilor BartolomeOrola, said that pursuant to City Ordinance No. 10627, or the Anti-Bullying Ordinance of Bacolod City, it is the declared policy of Bacolod City that the right of children to their survival, protection, participation and development, must be given the highest priority.

It has always been the concern of the city to provide means to ensure the safety and security of the children within school premises, it said.

The resolution said several incidents of acts of bullying were reported by the local media, raising parental concernsover the physical and emotional well-being of student victims.

Notwithstanding that educational institutions have established policies against bullying, emphasis should also be given to the proper procedures when addressing such incidents, it said.

It is also prudent to be vigilant in monitoring cases of cyber bullying as social media is oftentimes used as a means to further escalate bullying acts, which could be detrimental to the emotional well-being of the victim and is known to cause depression, anxiety and low self-esteem to victims when not put to a stop immediately, the resolution said.

There is a need to spread awareness on the negative effects of bullying, not only in schools but in the community as well, in order to safeguard the physical and emotional well-being of the students, it added.*CGS
