part of Ayala mall

The Department of Labor Employment served a work stoppage order yesterday afternoon on the section of the Ayala mall in Barangay 8, Bacolod City, where two construction workers died in a fall on Saturday, DOLE 6 Regional Director Johnson Cañete said.

Construction workers Doddy Malorca, 30, of Manapla, Negros Occidental, and Hercaleo Abraham, 36, of Magsungay, Bacolod City died at 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

Mary Agnes Capigon, Negros Occidental DOLE field office head, said the initial report is that the two were pouring cement on the 6th floor, when astructure collapsed.

The Bacolod Capitol Central Mall and Kuntel Construction, in a statement, said they are coordinating with the families of Abraham and Malorca to extend the needed assistance.

Capigon said the work stoppage order was officially issued yesterday but work came to a halt in the affected area on Saturday yet.

The stoppage will be in effect until KuntelConstruction submitsits work plan for clearing the affected area, she said.

Two DOLE investigators went to the construction site where the accident took place on Saturday and their reports were being consolidated, she also said.

Capigon said seven workers of Kuntel Construction were assigned to the section where the accident happened, two of whom were the fatalities.

So there are five workers affected by the work stoppage who will have to be paid their salaries during the work stoppage, Capigon said.
