115 years of thanksgiving

The Bacolod Evangelical Church recently celebrated their 115th founding anniversary, through a series of special events, with Rene Chanco as guest speaker. Chanco, a master theologian, discussed the church’s thanksgiving theme, “Let us carry our beams of thanksgiving”.

Among the highlights of the celebration was the evangelical concert of Jun Polistico. The singer-turned-evangelist touched the hearts of hundreds of the faithful gathered for the occasion with his songs that give honor to God. Towards the end of the concert, the singer surprised Bacolod City Mayor Bing and first lady Elsa Leonardia by serenading them with their theme song “You’re the best thing that ever happened to me”.

The Bacolod Evangelical Church was founded in 1902, and its first chapel was built by Don Eusebio Luzuriaga on a land he also donated to the church at the corner of San Sebastian-San Juan Streets, beside Lopue’s San Sebastian. In 1903, Rev. Archie Forshee opened the first dormitory for boys on the building now called Valentine Hall. On April 22, 1950, the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society paved the way for the construction of the present-day Bacolod Evangelical Church in a 2,388 square-meter property.

The Board of Trustees of the church include Ray Moleño as chairman, Angel Verdeflor - vice chairman, Sheila Easley - treasurer, Dr. Gloregene Guanzon - secretary, and Rosalid Gendrala, Dr. Noemi Juntado, Liberty Estebar, Levi Trio, Fe Verzosa, Edwin Guiking, Marc Leong, Neison Lavapiez, Rycela Hinolan, and Marilouy Gochuico as members.

The Board of Deacons are Gilfredo Geolingo Jr. as chairman, Mrio Barro - vice chairman, and Vemilma Javellana - secretary, with Ephraem Hechanova, Zacarias Ban, Eric Fernandez, Christine Infante, Luisa Bantolio, Frank Ravina, Janie Rose Villaroman, Ruby Garcia, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, Liz Guillema, Luz Valguna, Corazon Mesaya, Juby Ardiente, Ninfa Donguines, Jomela Montalvo, Helen Divinagracia, Renecito Novero and Rhoda Ordena as members.*
