Fifty-seven awards were given by the Negros Occidental Tourism Office to various towns, cities and industry stakeholders during the annual Provincial Tourism Excellence Awards at the Capitol in Bacolod City yesterday.
Supervising Tourism Operations Officer Cristine Mansinares said the awarding is held to recognize the efforts of stakeholders in making tourism development initiatives under the Negros First agenda of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr.
The ceremony capped this year's celebration of the 17th Provincial Tourism Week, on the theme “Tourism for Sustainable Development.”
Awards were given to cities and towns that are tourism oriented, with highest tourist arrivals and receipts, shortlisted to the Department of Tourism's Pearl Awards, and best booths.
Private sectors and partner agencies and organizations were also given recognitions.
La Carlota City was awarded for its prompt submission of tourism statistics in the province, while the towns of Hinobaan, Calatrava, Binalbagan, Cauayan, and Hinigaran, and the cities of Bago, Cadiz, Kabankalan, Sagay and Sipalay were awarded as top LGUs with high tourist volume.
The tourism-oriented LGUs were Bago, Cadiz, Sagay, San Carlos, Silay, Victorias, Binalbagan, Calatrava, and Hinoba-an.
Five LGUs from Negros Occidental were also shortlisted nominees in the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines and DOT's Pearl Awards this year. Sipalay was nominated for Best Tourism Week Celebration and Best Tourism Event, Silay - Best Practices in Community-Based Heritage Conservation Projects;
Sagay City for Best Practices in Community Based Tourism Campaign and Best Tourism Month Celebration, Victorias - Best Practices in Community Based Tourism Campaign, and Cadiz - Best Tourism Oriented LGU.
During this year's Provincial Tourism Fair at the mall, Murcia won the Best Booth, followed by Kabankalan, and Bago in third place.
Also, 23 partner-agencies and organizations were recognized for significantly contributing to the development and promotion of the tourism industry in Negros Occidental.
