Negros First softbelles eye to snap
losses via shutout of 2 foreign teams

The Negros First 11-12 age group softbelles hope to hand host Oregon its second straight loss when the Negrenses open their campaign in the World Series early this morning.

The young Negrenses, representing Asia-Pacific region, and the Oregon team from Lake Oswego, will clash at 3 a.m. today (7 p.m. Oregon time) in their Pool B schedule at the Alpenrose Field in Portland.

Oregon lost its opening-day match on Wednesday, 1-5, to U.S. Southwest, represented by River Ridge in Louisiana.

An Asia-Pacific win this morning will snap the twin-loss opening-day marks of foreign teams in the World Series.

Canada and the Latin American team from Monterrey, Mexico, failed to produce runs against U.S. regions East from Pennsylvania and Central (0hio), which scored 2 and 9 runs, respectively.

The fourth foreign team, Europe-Africa, represented by Czech Republic, will play its first game right after the Philippines-Oregon game today.

Coach Lizvi Jalandoni said she expects the Negros girls to improve their performance in the World Series last year when they reached the quarterfinals.

The team will face U.S. Central tomorrow, and Southwest and Latin America in its last two qualifying-round matches prior to the Monday quarterfinals.

The championship game is set on Wednesday following the Tuesday semifinal games.*
