P17.5M rice losses recorded
in Hinigaran, Himamaylan

Rice crop production losses of about P17.5 million in Hinigaran and Himamaylan City were due to a dry spell and rat infestation, a Negros Occidental Office of the Provincial Agriculturist report showed yesterday.

The report showed that Hinigaran town incurred P10,010,079.78 in damage due to a dry spell from November to December last year, while Himamaylan City had an estimated P7,469,078.40 damage due to rat infestation from December last year to January this year.

The estimated damage in the two local government units was placed at P17,479,158.18.

Benitez leads dialog
on irrigation program

Rep. Alfredo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3 rd District) led the presentation and consultation on the Malogo River Irrigation Program of the National Irrigation Administration, with stakeholders in the cities of Victorias and Silay, and the municipality of E.B. Magalona, Negros Occidental Monday, a press release from his office said.

He cited the five-point benefits of irrigation, namely to boost agricultural productivity, for flood mitigation, a source of potable water, as power component, and for eco-tourism.

He said the dialog held in Talisay City primarily sought to clarify salient points of the NIA program that was conceptualized and proposed in 2014, and up for its final implementation this year. He also underscored the need to analyze program details, and cited opportunities for synergy and convergence so that the program is effectively and efficiently implemented, with the understanding and acceptance of all concerned.

Negros boosts food
tourism linkages

The Negros Occidental provincial government is now benchmarking with the food tourism activities in Pampanga to create a similar food tourism program in this year's Panaad sa Negros Festival in April.

Provincial Planning and Development Officer Ma. Lina Sanogal said yesterday that Pampanga isa food destination in Luzon similar to Negros,that is also a key destination for food tourism in the Visayas.

Sanogal and provincial government officials and members of the Provincial Development Council were in Pampanga Monday to attend a Strategic Planning and Management Workshop and benchmarking activities in some sites in the province.
