ConCom adds provision,
bars Duterte re-election
BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

The Consultative Committee tasked to draft the Federal Constitution has agreed to put a provision barring President Rodrigo Duterte from running in 2022, its spokesman Ding Generoso said yesterday.

Provisions will also be provided for the election of a transition president and vice president, who will be elected in tandem, he told the DAILY STAR.

The transition president and vice president will serve until June 30, 2022, while the regular election will be held on the second Monday of May 2022, he added.

Asked if the 2019 midterm elections would push through, Generoso said that is not for ConCom to determine.

“It will all depend on when Congress can finish the review of the ConCom draft, finalize the proposed constitution, and schedule the plebiscite,” he said.

The president approved “in toto” or as a whole, the draft Federal Constitution, which includes the creation of the Negrosanon Federated Region, and will endorse it to Congress, except for the transitory provisions which he wants amended, Generoso had said on Monday.

The proposed NFR will be composed of Negros Occidental and Oriental, and Siquijor.

Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya said the expected support of the Visayan Bloc in the House, which includes 11 congressmen from the three provinces under the NFR, will really be a big help.

“The merits of NFR’s necessity and feasibility will be solid grounds that it will be part of the new charter,” he said.*CPG
