The business of tourism

Ninfa Leonardia

This is the time of the year when the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry conducts a week-long expo to promote micro and small enterprises, otherwise known as the blue collared entrepreneurs of Negros Occidental.

The Negros Business Week opened at the mall with members of MBCCI, headed by president Roberto Montelibano with Provincial Administrator Lucille Gelvolea cutting the ribbon. The theme for this year is “Government and Business Partnering for Growth and Development-Building Capacities, Finding Solutions”.

The Minuluan drumbeaters entertained the guests and shoppers. This year, Negros Occidental Tourism Division, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Department of Science and Technology with the Technology and Livelihood Development Center are supporting the event with their own displays. The exhibition is for seven days, or until Sunday.

Selling of goods and services are featured, from the plants of Christdel’s Garden and Guerrero Farms, food from El Ideal, FudMaster, Shienas Homemade Peanut Products, Virgies Home Made Products and GH Foods, coffee beans from EB Magalona, native delicacies, clothing from Rorish Marketing and Sleek Chic, house decors from TLDC and Tumadok Crafts, souvenir items, native bags and mats from Calatrava, and housekeeping needs like brooms from EB Magalona.

Exhibitors from the towns and cities are EB Magalona, Himamaylan, Kabankalan, Salvador Benedicto, Sagay, and Talisay with Mugna –The Negros Cultural Foundation and Bell Hotel, SunLife Financial, Twin Bee Print Ads Corporation, GDR Auto Supply Trading, Intellicare, Norgies/JSA and Grab Philippines Inc.

It is interesting to note that all exhibitors one way or the other is connected with the tourism industry in Negros Occidental. It supports the thrust of the Department of Tourism which focuses on tourism planning and development, promotion and marketing, information and assistance, and tourism standards. In fact, the people behind micro and small enterprises are being assisted by the government through the different departments in developing the capacity of women and children, the housewives, farmers and fisherfolk. The business in tourism empowers people, is labor-intensive, and creates more jobs.

This is a laudable showcase of products and various member companies of MBCCI which creates more opportunities for investment and entrepreneurship. Kudos to Frank Carbon and the MBCCI team for a successful exhibition. Visit Robinsons Place Bacolod at the stage area where exhibitors await you until July 15.
