Committee okays
brgy polls delay

The House Committee on Suffrage yesterday voted to postpone the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections from May 14 to October 8 this year, Rep. Joseph Stephen Paduano (Abang Lingkod Partylist), a member of the committee, said.

The committee members voted 17-2 to postpone the polls, and 17-1 to set it on October 8, he said.

Asked how the postponement would progress if the Senate is not acting on a counterpart measure, Paduano said “We are duty bound to act on pending bills calendared by the committee. Bahala ang Senate to act on it.”

Earlier, Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said the Commission on Elections is all set for the barangay and SK polls on May 14 but whether it will push through or not, is up to Congress.

Senators Sonny Angara and Nancy Binay-Angeles during recent visits to Bacolod said the Senate has no plan of approving a counterpart measure postponing the May polls that they said would be held as scheduled.*CPG
