Former mayor loses
bid for brgy captain
BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

A former three-term mayor and vice mayor lost her bid for barangay captain in Monday’s polls.

Cynthia de la Cruz, who once headed Salvador Benedicto town in Negros Occidental, lost to incumbent barangay captain Rogelio “Nonoy” Asin, her son Salvador Benedicto Mayor Laurence Marxlen dela Cruz confirmed yesterday.

Her other son Nehemiah Joe dela Cruz Jr. is the vice mayor of the town.

Marxlen said his mother lost by about 500 votes to Asin whose kagawad running mates were also incumbents.

Asin was a strong contender and his mother, who is kind of weak, began her campaign late, he said.

Her running mates for kagawad were also not strong contenders, he said.

However, Marxlen said that in Monday’s elections he gained two more barangay captain allies from Kumaliskis and Bunga, bringing the number to three.

When he ran for mayor in 2016 and won, he only had the Pandanon barangay captain as his ally, out of seven barangay captains of the town, he said.*CPG
