Congratulations to Bacolod City for improving its ranking by eight notches – from 97th in 2017 to 89th this year – in the Top 100 Super cities in the world of global advisory firm Tholons.
Based on the Tholons Services Globalization Index published early this week, Bacolod was among the six other cities in the Philippines that managed to make big leaps in their respective rankings. Manila moved up from No. 3 to 2 this year, Cebu from 12 to 11, Davao from 85 to 75, and Sta. Rosa in Laguna from 100 to 87. Iloilo also broke into the Top 100 – at 92nd this year.
Among the metrics that Tholons used to evaluate location attractiveness on outsourcing were talent skills and quality, business catalyst, cost, infrastructure, risk and quality of life and digital innovation, which was the criterion with the highest percentage at 25 percent.
The current release of TSGI 2018 included cyber security, digital skills scale and global competitiveness to gauge the wider aspects and impact of the digital ecosystem.
The number of Philippine cities in the Top 100 list allowed it to rank second in the Top 50 digital nations of the world next to India, followed by Brazil, United States and Mexico, the Tholons report added.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia said that Bacolod’s ranking is a big encouragement as it indicates that the major economic drivers in the city are shooting up. These drivers include business registrations, tourist arrivals, construction, property development, with information technology riding the growth momentum.
Not many cities in the country can break into this list of Top 100 Super Cities and those that do need to maintain their momentum to stay in the list and constantly improve to move their ranking up. This marked and noticeable improvement is a laudable feat for the city of Bacolod, its people, business sector and public officials who have been working tirelessly in the background to push for improvements that ordinary citizens may take for granted but are noticeable to influential advisory firms like Tholons.
As we congratulate everyone who had a role in the continuing improvement of Bacolod City and its quest to be among the higher ranked super cities, let us also remember to do our share in helping our beloved cities score better in surveys and metrics that show how and where the gains are being made so we can focus our efforts on the initiatives that are working and bearing positive results.*
