The members of Grupo Progreso will file their certificates of candidacy today instead of Oct. 15, following a 12:15 p.m. mass at the Bacolod San Sebastian Cathedral.
Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said the streets from the Cathedral leading to the Commission on Elections where they are filing their COCs, will be turned into a “sea of red” as they will all be wearing red shirts, including their friends and supporters.
“We will have a sea of red armies in the streets,” he said.
Leonardia said they will present their complete slate this morning during a press conference to be followed by a short rally at the BAYS Center.
He said their line-up includes incumbent Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, incumbent Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran - Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan, and himself as mayor - NPC.
Their line-up in the City Council is composed of six incumbent, three returning Sangguniang Panlungsod members, and three veteran politicians, Leonardia said.
The incumbents are councilors Bartolome Orola (PDP), Cindy Rojas (PDP), Renecito Novero (PDP), Dindo Ramos (NPC), Elmer Sy (PDP), and Ana Marie Palermo, while the returnees are former councilors Al Victor Espino (NPC), Archie Baribar (PDP), Carlos Jose Lopez – Nacionalista Party, he said.
Leonardia said the three others are Singcang-Airport kagawad Simple Distrito (NP), Israel Salanga (NPC), and broadcaster Marlon Solidum (NPC).
Grupo Progreso is not a political party itself, but is an aggrupation of the political parties in Bacolod City, he said.
“We believe this is a blockbuster team. This is a solid and committed team and the chemistry and relation of the group is very tight and very high,” he added.
Leonardia said they are calling on their friends and supporters, sympathizers, and believers in Grupo Progreso to come.
They believe they also have the sympathy of the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, numbering about 50 or more, and about 54 of the 61 barangay captains, he said.
Meanwhile, Lopez confirmed yesterday that he is the one running for councilor, and not his wife, Albernina Pascual-Lopez.
Lopez said he wanted to continue serving the people of Bacolod and since he is welcome in Grupo Progreso, he decided to run.
He said that since they were able to put their business in order and that maybe it is part of God’s plan, he is ready and willing to be able to serve the people of Bacolod again, given another chance.
Lopez said he has been part of Grupo Progreso and his relationship with the group has always remained intact.
He said Leonardia is his friend and he had always supported him.*
