2 firms eye investing
in Negros swine industry
BY CARLA P. GOMEZ

Two big firms have expressed interest in investing in Negros Occidental’s swine industry, Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said yesterday.

They are San Miguel Corp. (SMC), and agribusiness conglomerate Charoen Pokphand (CP) of Thailand, he said.

SMC is interested in putting up a huge piggery in Negros Occidental, he said.

CP, that is bigger than SMC, is also looking to put up a huge piggery project in Negros Occidental and is currently looking for a site, he added.

The governor said the province is already exporting pork to Cebu, with the slaughterhouse in Sagay City already in operation.

Negros Occidental has plenty of pigs, the bottleneck is the slaughterhouse does not have enough blast freezers, he said.

The blast freezer it has can only take 16 tons of pork per load, he said.

Swine and poultry from Negros Occidental are very much in demand, the governor said.

Investors in such industries are interested in Negros Occidental because it is disease free, he explained.*
