The Philippines struggled to make its shots from long distance in an 81-73 loss to Iran in the Asian qualifiers of the 2019 FIBA World Cup last night, despite the 30 points contributed by Christian Standhardinger.
Yeng Guiao and his crew gave the former 3-time FIBA Asia champions a good fight and showed in several instances that they were capable of shocking the Iranians on their home floor at Azady Gym in Tehran, ABS-CBN News reported.
But Guiao’s snipers couldn’t find the mark when they needed it the most.
Gilas Pilipinas players shot five of 28 overall from downtown, with primary perimeter threats Alex Cabagnot and Marcio Lassiter going 1 of 7 each from 3-point territory.
The Philippines fell to 4-3 in Group F, while Iran upped its record to 6-1, the report said.
Iran took control in the fourth quarter, as the Filipinos couldnot buy a basket for nearly a 6-minute stretch.
After Standhardinger’s bucket at the 6:42 mark, the next field goal for the Philippines came courtesy of Cabagnot but with the game out of reach.
Standhardinger also finished with 12 rebounds, while shooting 10 of 14 from the field, and 10 of 12 from the free-throw line.
Cabagnot chipped in 9 points and 5 assists.
