Palermo joining Bing’s group
BY CHRYSEE G. SAMILLANO

Bacolod Councilor Ana Marie Palermo confirmed that she is joining the Grupo Progreso on her last term as councilor.

Palermo said she was former city legal officer of Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia in 1995 when she first joined the city government. She had also served former mayors Oscar Verdeflor, Luzviminda Valdez and Monico Puentevella, and again, Leonardia.

She will join Leonardia in the coming election as a form of gratitude, she said, adding that she believes it is fitting and right to support him in continuing the programs he envisions for the city.

Among the councilors, she has experiences in both executive and legislative branches, Palermo said.

There are still many programs being envisioned by the mayor and she wants to be part of them to help make Bacolod ready and capable to meet the challenges of the 20th century, she said.

Palermo also thanked MKK and Puentevella for accommodating her during her first term as returning councilor.

Asked for his reaction, Mayor Evelio Leonardia said they are going to make an official declaration of their candidates at the most appropriate time, particularly because the Commission on Elections agreed to the request of the joint resolution of the Senate and House of Representatives to transfer the deadline of the filing of certificates of candidacy to Oct. 11 to 17.

Leonardia said they have invited people who were not with them before and they welcome them, including Palermo.

There are also other barangay captains and kagawads and those in the grassroots level who have expressed their desire to join them, he said.

Leonardia said the incident at the Sanggunian involving Councilors Claudio Puentevella and Dindo Ramos will undoubtedly have repercussions on Bacolod politics. But their recruitment of people joining Grupo Progreso has accelerated because of it.*CGS
