Sagay kids recognized

The children of Sagay City in Negros Occidental took center stage at the recent 27 th National Children’s Month celebration at the city gym, where Mayor Alfredo Marañon III delivered his State of the Children’s Address.

The city government’s Council for the Protection of Children and the Department of Education-Division of Sagay held the “Adlaw sang Kabataan”, and Marañon urged all stakeholders to help instill positive values to the Sagaynon children.

In his address, he reminded the parents, teachers, government officials, elders, and other stakeholders that it is our responsibility to teach and instill in our children the positive values that they have to live with, a press release from the city said.

“These are patriotism, honesty, integrity, selflessness, respect for elders and our fellowmen, love of God and neighbor, and sacrifice,” he said, adding, “We need these values in our everyday living as a good Christian, a responsible and concerned citizen, a respectable individual worthy of emulation.”

Marañon also assured support to all children’s programs, especially in education, sports, nutrition, arts and culture, and programs meant to develop their skills and talents.

The city government also recognized 172 Sagaynon kids, who represented the city and the DepEd Sagay City Division to the provincial, regional, and national competitions from October 2018 to October 2019.

The awardees were able to achieve bronze, silver and gold medals in their respective areas of competition, such as performing and visual arts, academics, and sports through the “Bulahang Batang Sagaynon” award.

The city’s “little officials”, who acted as heads of the city government and other government agencies for a week were also presented. They were organized by the non-government organization, Sagay Sigay JCI, with president Evangeline Yu and past president Rex Yangco, the press release said.

Little Mayor Mecca Ella Barrios, who is the reigning Sinigayan Queen, said they will do their share to help in bringing progress and development to the city.

Councilor Concepcion Javellana, chairman of the SP Committee on Social Services, said the Children’s Month celebration is intended to give importance to our children and the city government will continue to create programs for their development.

Councilor Perfecto Marañon, who spoke on behalf of Vice Mayor Narciso Javelosa Jr., said that children “are a gift from God and it is our responsibility to take care of them and raise them properly.”

Also present during the program were Councilor Roldan Gamao, SK Federation president Roed Bais, DepEd Sagay department heads, and barangay officials.*
