WV farm tourism plan up
BY MARK L. GARCIA

The Department of Tourism is gathering various stakeholders in Western Visayas today to create a comprehensive plan per province, including Negros Occidental, to develop a regional farm tourism strategic plan.

Negros Occidental Provincial Supervising Tourism Operations officer, Cristine Mansinares, said yesterday that DOT 6 is conducting the Regional Farm Tourism Strategic Action Plan consultation Jan. 10-11 in Iloilo City, to help the agency address various aspects of farm tourism in Western Visayas.

Among the tourism issues tackled in the event are infrastructure and product development, market promotion, manpower trainings, investment promotion and financing incentives, and priority interventions that will catalyze growth in local communities, Mansinares said.

Tourism officers, owners of DOT-accredited farm sites, members of the Panay Organic Producers Association, and regional representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Department of Trade and Industry, and the Department of Public Works and Highways, are attending the activity.

Mansinares said that Negros Occidental was represented by the Provincial Tourism Office, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, and three DOT-accredited farm tourism sites, the Rapha Valley, May’s Garden, and the Twenty Six Herb Garden.

She also said the activity is in line with the farm tourism development thrust of the national government, through Republic Act 10816, or an act providing for the development and promotion of farm tourism in the Philippines.

“It will further support the product development and marketing efforts of our existing and potential farm tourism sites,” Mansinares said, adding that the event will prioritize the farm tourism standards through DOT accreditation.

DOT 6 Director Helen Catalbas said it will be a growing regional strategic plan, Mansinares said, and will be presented in a bigger audience through a summit when finished.

The comprehensive content of various action plans of the provinces in Western Visayas will be tackled today, Mansinares added.*
