A foot-and-mouth problem

Ninfa Leonardia

Today is the 12th of January, 2019, a dozen days of the New Year, and the President of our Senate is just calling for a caucus on the country’s budget! What have the members of the so-called Upper House been doing that they have not acted on the most important plan concerning the finances of the entire country? Well, an excuse seems to be the delay also by the Lower House, but that body apparently met its deadline by the skin of its members’ teeth.

One wonders why these two bodies seem to be thinking of other things rather than the very important one of the national budget. And they don’t seem to find any urgency in approving it on time. Today, a full dozen days after 2018 has gone by, it is still only a “caucus” they are thinking about. And it seems as if, at the moment, they are more concerned about abolishing the Road Board. The body is due to resume sessions two days from now, i.e. on January 14. How many days will it take for themselves to fix their sights on the budget?

Again we hear the “doctor” from the Palace insisting that his boss is in the pink of health. It seems “Dr.” Salvador Panelo, the presidential spokesman, has once again stressed to the media that his president continues to enjoy good health, because people are said to be worrying about it. Doesn’t he know that the more he denies the rumors, the more people think about it? Hasn’t he heard, or studied the Shakespearean drama, “Macbeth”, where the quote “Methinks and lady doth protest too much” came from?

Anyway, the Filipino people already know what ailments their President has suffered from and even what drugs, I mean, medications, he has been taking. And many of them even suspect that these are what cause him to talk the way he does, cursing and swearing and threatening, at will. And there is nothing they can do about it, no matter how critics complain. And the more shocked they get, the more he enjoys it. Maybe if a veterinarian were asked to attend to him, he might even call the malady a foot-and-mouth disease!

He may shock or scare people with his pronouncements and “confessions” about his wrongdoings in his youth, but, so far, Pinoys seem to be the tolerating him, and some even manage to accept “Dr.” Panelo’s repeated explanations about all those statements as merely “jokes”. Editorials, columns and commentaries on air may lambast him, but have you ever heard the President himself react to them? One can almost hear him say “Do your worst and see if I care”. So let us relax, and for those who voted for him and are now complaining, there is another trite saying, “You’ve made your bed, now lie in it”.

In the United States, meanwhile, where a lot of citizens are agonizing under the administration of their unpresidential president, who apparently was good in private business, but is now just making decisions willy-nilly as he goes along, a certain billionaire has lost his patience and has now placed in his money where his mouth is, by setting aside several millions to be spent on a campaign to impeach Donald Trump, and boot him out of the White House. And he is very serious about it.

***

The billionaire, who was believed earlier to be eyeing the presidency himself, has announced that he will spend his money to focus on a campaign to impeach Trump. He claims that this is now possible because the Democrats have taken over the Congress, and that he is going to do whatever he can to protect his country from the one he calls a “reckless, lawless and dangerous president”. He is giving up his plans to run for president in 2020, and will devote all his time, effort and resources on the impeachment of Trump. That’s one example of a man putting his money where his mouth is.

Wow! Our Manny Pacquiao apparently continues to be a favorite among sportswriters in the U.S. as shown by photos from the international wire services showing him surrounded by them, and apparently holding court and amusing them with his quips. Our Manny seemed so at ease and confident with the horde of writers, he has indeed gone a long way from that shy and timid fighter who seemed tongue-tied before the media. But then he was only a famous boxer, now he is renowned, and a senator of his country as well. What a long way you’ve gone, Manny!*
