Duterte’s help sought to fast-track
Cebu-Negros-Panay power project

CEBU CITY — The Regional Development Council 7 is determined to seek the intervention of President Rodrigo Duterte to fast-track two important power expansion projects in the Visayas - the Cebu-Negros-Panay backbone and Cebu-Bohol interconnection - to cope with the rising demand for power amidst the rapid development in the region.

RDC-7 chair Kenneth Cobonpue said the Council sees the need to include the projects among the “energy projects of national significance (EPNS)”.

The Infrastructure Development Committee passed a resolution during its March 8 meeting, recommending to the RDC Full Council to request Duterte to intervene in the Cebu-Bohol interconnection and Cebu-Negros-Panay backbone projects and include it in the EPNS, he added.

Tariffication to cushion impact
of dry spell on rice prices: exec

MANILA - Agricultural production is seen to take a hit from the "mild" El Niño currently being felt in the country but its impact on rice inflation is seen to be mitigated by the Rice Tariffication Law.

ING Bank Manila senior economist Nicholas Mapa said yesterday that initial estimate on crop damage on the first month of the dry weather condition is estimated at around P464.27 million.

By comparison, the damage to crops of the strong El Niño episode from November 2014 to May 2016 was placed at about P8.7 billion, while cost of the moderate El Niño from July 2009 to April 2010 was pegged at around P6.42 billion, he said.
