An orientation on Republic Act 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their children (VAWC) Act of 2004, RA 7610 or the law against child abuse, and on HIV-AIDs will be held today at the Women’s Center Building, Rizal Boulevard in Dumaguete City.
Local Council on Women chair, Rosalinda Abellon, will spearhead the activity in observance of National Women’s Month this March to enhance the capabilities of barangay VAW desk officers in handling women survivors of gender-based violence.
The program aims to help improve the skills of VAW desk officers in the barangays through capability-building activities and orientations. The LCW will also hold capability-building measures for first responders in the barangays.
City Prosecutor Lalaine Cimafranca noted that a lot of things still need to be done in terms of how VAWC cases are handled in courts.
She added there is need to improve the initial response, documentation process, monitoring and full prosecution of cases, and the aftercare, that she said is most important, to avoid a repetitive cycle.
Cimafranca appealed for cooperation from the barangay VAW desk officers to ensure the successful handling of VAW cases. She emphasized that the officers play a crucial role in building a strong basis for a case.*
