initiatives vs. African swine fever
BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

Hog raisers in the Visayas are set to consolidate all their efforts and initiatives in stopping the entry of the dreaded African swine fever virus to the region, Negros Occidental Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said yesterday.

Commercial hog raisers in the Visayas will convene a general assembly in Cebu City on November 12, he said.

Decena said the Negrense delegation will share the proposed ordinance that will permanently prohibit the entry of live pigs and pork products from Luzon and other ASF-affected areas to the province.

BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson led the distribution of 400 free-range chicks to beneficiaries from the second and fourth districts, at the Provincial Livestock Breeding Center and Dairy Farm in Barangay La Granja, La Carlota City Wednesday.

This is part of the livelihood program of the provincial government for the farmers organizations.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said Negros Occidental is the country’s top producer of free-range chickens, with 5,286,292 native chickens produced this year. Other top producers in the country are the provinces of Iloilo, Bukidnon, Cebu, and Palawan.
