Create LGU employment offices: Bello
BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III is urging local government units to establish their own employment offices to boost their efforts in generating jobs.

Bello was in Bacolod City yesterday for the opening of the three-day 19th National Public Employment Service Office Congress at the SMX Convention Center.

During an interview, he said that PESO has made a huge contribution in terms of job generation. He stressed that 20 percent of jobs in the country were generated through the efforts of employment offices.

“A congress like this is needed to underscore the need to strengthen the tie-up between the LGUs and the national government,” he said. He added that the local government, through its PESO, can help in creating job generation and opportunities.

He added that facilitation of jobs needs the help of local executives, however, only few LGUs have established employment offices.

Most of the highly-urbanized cities have their own PESO, but other local government units are not aware of the need to create an employment office.

He said that LGUs with PESO will always be prioritized in terms of programs implemented by DOLE.*
