The Negros Occidental provincial government was initially thinking of allocating P10 million for the purchase of palay, but will only be able to use P5 million that is already included in the Annual Investment Plan to help farmers, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said yesterday.
The provincial government will use the P5 million to buy palay at P15 a kilo, convert it to rice and sell it, and roll over the money to continue buying palay, he said.
We will target the palay of farmers owning one hectare or less for as long as it is needed, Lacson added.
The provincial government is purchasing palay to help the farmers as right now most of the traders are not even buying, the governor said.
The National Food Authority has been buying palay at P20.70 per kilo but will not be able to cover all of the farmers, he said.
The provincial government is now working on the mechanics for palay buying, he said.*
