The family of the late La Carlota City Mayor Luis “Jacky” Jalandoni III will be given the first option to name the person they wish to fill a vacated councilor’s seat in the city, Acting Negros Occidental Gov. Jeffrey Ferrer said yesterday.
Jalandoni succumbed to liver cancer at St. Luke's Medical Center last week.
Vice Mayor Dr. Rex Jalando-on took over as mayor of La Carlota City with the death of Jalandoni. The city’s number one councilor David “Junjun” Baga Jr. then took over as vice mayor, Ferrer said.
That left one vacant councilor’s seat.
By tradition it is the family of the deceased who chooses the person to fill the vacated post, Ferrer said.
Since Jalandoni was a member of the National Unity Party and the United Negros Alliance, Ferrer said he will then forward the family’s choice to Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson for appointment.
That is because Ferrer is the NUP provincial chairman and UNegA president.
But for now let’s give the Jalandoni family time to grieve, Ferrer said, adding that he will consult with them on the matter at the end of the month.
Ferrer said he will respect the decision of the family and if they are not interested in appointing anyone, he will then have to consult the elders in La Carlota on whom they wish to take the vacant councilor’s post.
Meanwhile, an announcement on the La Carlota City’s Facebook page yesterday said the remains of Jalandoni that was brought to La Carlota City for the weekend, will be at the Acropolis Gardens in Barangay Bata, Bacolod City, until tomorrow.
A memorial service with family and close friends will be held at 9 a.m. today and public viewing will commence at 1 p.m. until Wednesday, it said.
Details on Jalandoni’s interment will be announced later, it added.*
