POC, PSC welcome Olympics delay

Philippine Olympic Committee president Bambol Tolentino and Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez yesterday welcomed the official postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

"It’s the right decision—for athletes, officials, organizers and spectators. [This is] for our safety," Tolentino said in a statement.

"I have always expressed that I favor its postponement, given the way this crisis seems to be taking," Ramirez, for his part, said in a separate statement.

Football fans fuelled virus in Italy

Ecstatic fans cheering and hugging at the Champion's League game between Atalanta and Valencia in February boosted the spread of the coronavirus, the mayor of the worst-hit Italian city said yesterday.

Bergamo, in the northern Lombardy region, is now Italy's worst-hit province, with nearly 6,728 infections.

Its football team Atalanta had been having a stellar season, with a historic Champions League qualification. Its game against Spanish rival Valencia on February 19 at the San Siro stadium in Milan had been feverishly awaited by fans.
