About 5,000 universal transport medium testing kits requested by the congressmen of Negros Occidental to be used for persons suspected to be infected with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) will be arriving today, Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya said.
The test kits will be delivered to the Western Visayas Medical Center in Iloilo which is accredited by the Department of Health (DOH) as the Western Visas “testing center”, Gasataya said.
Based on the projection of the DOH, the 5,000 testing kits, that will be able to test 50,000 specimens, will serve the entire region for three to six months. One kit can test 10 persons under investigation (PUIs) in Region 6, he said.
Gasataya said the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) has sent medical technologists to the Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC) and the testing center is already operational.
He said specimens of personsfrom all over the region suspected to be infected with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) will be sent to the WVMC.
They expect the results to be known after 48 hours compared to when these are brought to the RITM in Manila that would take about five days because of the volume of specimens coming from the different provinces, he said.
Gasataya said that yesterday, additional equipment arrived from the DOH for the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital. More equipment from the DOH are expected to be delivered, he added.*
