Capitol eyeing to generate jobs
BY MARCHEL P. ESPINA

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said the provincial government is eyeing to come up with a program that could generate jobs for the Negrenses.

During the provincial government’s small group consultation with the business sector last week, industry leaders have asked how the government can help stimulate the economy, he said.

The national government is preparing for this, the governor said, adding that agencies have programs that offer lending assistance to micro, small and medium enterprises.

“I think the problem is how to avail of it. It is not yet clear, especially to the MSMEs, on how to avail of these programs,” he said.

On the part of the province, the provincial government can help by hiring people, he said.

“But if we hire people, there should be a purpose. And not just hire people without doing anything,” he said.

He added, “We’re hoping we can come up with a program where there is a need to hire people. If we do that, there is job generation.”

Early this week, the business sector in the province has submitted to the provincial government its proposed economic recovery plan for Negros Occidental.

One of the proposals outlined by the business sector is the quick restart of the ongoing government infrastructure projects since this is the fastest way to create jobs for thousands of Negrenses.*
