1 killed as taxi holdup turns into shootout with cops

• THERESA MAE DULMAN

An armed confrontation between the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) resulted in the death of a holdupper, on the evening of March 2, after attempting to rob a 74-year-old taxi driver in Barangay 40, Bacolod City.

The incident began when 31-year-old alias ‘Benjie’ and an accomplice known as ‘Ferdinand’ posed as passengers and hailed a taxi driven by Gil Montilla along Roxas Street.

Upon reaching the vicinity of Lupit Church, the suspects dropped their disguise and declared a hold-up, threatening the senior driver with a bladed weapon and a firearm.

The victim managed to signal for help, drawing the attention of a nearby Mobile Patrol Unit conducting visibility operations.

The situation turned into a shootout when the suspects refused to surrender and instead engaged the responding officers, resulting in the death of ‘Ferdinand’.

Police are now preparing to file a case of robbery-holdup against ‘Benjie,’ a resident of Cauayan, Negros Occidental.*
