BY ADRIAN P. NEMES III

Dengue hemorrhagic fever claimed the life of a one-year-old boy from Brgy. Sum-ag, Bacolod, the first ever recorded casualty of the disease this year, acting City Health Officer, Dr. Edwin Miraflor, told the DAILY STAR yesterday.

Miraflor said the boy had fever on Jan. 21 and was rushed to a private hospital where he died the following day, after he experienced loose bowel movement and convulsions.

But he said they could not determine yet whether the boy got the disease in their home or somewhere else.

Miraflor also said that, so far, there are less than five dengue cases in Bacolod since January but the CHO’s campaign against it continues the whole-year-round.

The Department of Health said in its website that the dengue virus is transmitted by day biting Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Dengue has four serotypes, where the first infection with one of the four serotypes is usually non-severe or asymptomatic, while the second infection may cause severe dengue, it added.

Dengue is usually characterized by a sudden high fever of up to 106 degrees Fahrenheit, severe headache, swollen lymph glands, severe joint and muscle pains, skin rashes that appear between two and five days after the initial fever, mild to severe nausea and vomiting, mild bleeding from the nose or gums, mild bruising on the skin, and febrile convulsions.

Miraflor urged Bacolodnons to clean their surroundings, especially those that can hold stagnant water that would eventually become the breeding ground of the dengue-carrying mosquitoes. He added that residents should search and destroy mosquito breeding grounds, seek early consultation if they feel ill, and observe self-protection measures to avoid dengue.*
