15 Bacolod students isolated due to exanthema virus

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Fifteen of 32 students of the Negros Occidental High School in Bacolod City, are still in isolation, having been infected by the exanthem virus, commonly called “makayha,” from September 1 to October this year, according to Ian Arnold Arnaez, the spokesman of the Department of Education (DepEd) – Negros Occidental.

Arnaez said the 17 others have already returned to school and attended classes.

Exanthem is a medical term that describes a widespread rash. A viral exanthem rash accompanies a viral infection. It causes spots, bumps or blotches on the skin.

Dr. Shiela Blancia, NOHS Medical Officer 3, disclosed earlier that teachers have been advised to shift to alternative learning when a student is confirmed to be affected by “makayha” to prevent the spread to other students.

The viral exantem, according to Blancia, can be spread by exposure to affected areas like door knobs, droplets from affected individuals, money touched by patients.

She added that the virus stays in the bodies of affected students for 14 days. “There is no medicine for exanthem. Prevention, like washing of hands and isolation, is key,” she pointed out.

Blancia also advised parents to immediately seek medical attention if their children are affected by the virus.

She added that the NOHS has intensified its campaign against “makayha”, as it poses a danger especially to senior citizens and those who are pregnant, as it may cause abnormalities in the unborn children.*
