150 displaced La Carlota families returning home

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

If the situation at Kanlaon volcano does not worsen, the 150 families, composed of 557 individuals, from four sitios of Barangay Yubo in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, which were placed under preemptive evacuation, will be allowed to return to their homes during the weekend, Mayor Rex Jalandoon disclosed.

Jalandoon however encouraged senior citizens and those who are bedridden to temporarily stay with their relatives at the poblacion of La Carlota City, which was placed under a state of calamity due to restiveness of Kanlaon volcano and the effects of the southwest monsoon.

On September 21, about 2,800 La Castellana evacuees from danger areas at the volcano returned to their homes.

La Castellana and La Carlota City were among the areas affected by the stench of sulfur from Kanlaon, which led to cancellation of classes in 14 Bago City schools on Wednesday.

Over the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded seven volcanic quakes, compared to double digits logged in previous days, and it also logged 7,302 tonnes of sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano on Sept. 25.

The volcano edifice remains inflated and Alert Level 2 is still in effect over Kanlaon.

Entry to the four kilometer danger zone is still prohibited.*
