The police reported yesterday that two persons drowned over the weekend, in the cities of Silay and Kabankalan, Negros Occidental.

A certain Renan Antiano, 22, of Brgy. Zone 3, Talisay City, was declared dead on arrival at the Teresita Lopez Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City, after a freak accident while having a swim at the Malogo river in Sitio Lupa, Brgy. Kapitan Ramon, Silay City, on Sunday.

Initial police investigation showed that Antiano and his friend, Arby Jamile, accidentally collided with each other after jumping into the water from a five-meter-high elevated portion of the riverbank.

Jamile also suffered injuries on the head when he collided with Antiano, who was submerged, as a result of the incident.

After the body of Antiano was recovered from the water by rescuers, he and Jamile were both immediately rushed to a hospital in Silay City.

Antiano, was however reported by the police to have been declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the cadaver of a 60-year-old woman was found floating at the Tagbak river on December 9 in Brgy. Tan-awan, Kabankalan City.

Police investigation showed that the victim may have drowned, after she failed to return home on Saturday.

Based on testimonies of her family members, the victim reportedly accompanied her carabao to the river, prior to the incident, the police said.*
