Villanueva eyes IBF superfly title
against Arroyo in Texas tomorrow

Undefeated Cebu-based fighter Arthur Villanueva will be in for the toughest fight of his life when he challenges fellow undefeated fighter McJoe Arroyo for vacant International Boxing Federation super flyweight title tomorrow in Texas.

Villanueva, the World Boxing Organization Asia Pacific super flyweight title, will be fighting in the US for the first time and says he's not daunted at the prospect.

"I don't feel any pressure and I have adjusted well here. It feels like I'm just in Cebu," said Villanueva, who has been in the US with trainer Edito Villamor for close to two weeks.

City dads laud Nietes

The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod City passed a resolution congratulating Donnie "Ahas" Nietes for successfully defending his WBO junior flyweight title against Mexican Francisco Rodriguez during their July 11 fight in Cebu.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Caesar Distrito and co-authored by Councilor Em Ang, said that in a boxing match dubbed as Pinoy Pride 31: Battle of the World Champions, world champion boxer Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, a native of Bacolod City and Murcia, defeated his Mexican opponent Francisco Rodriguez via a unanimous decision and succeeded in defending his WBO Junior Flyweight belt.

It said Rodriguez was a tough opponent for Nietes who made solid punches during the late rounds of the match, however, despite having injuries, the latter showed how a great fighter he was by performing extraordinarily until the last bell of the game.
