BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Sugar Regulatory Administration Board Member Emilio Yulo said Saturday that the sugar milling season for this year is much better, compared to 2019, in terms of “gross tons and canes milled”.

Yulo said the price of sugar is steady at P1,000 per 50 kilo bag, as of this time, and that is profitable for sugar producers and fair to consumers, he added.

While he admitted that the purity of sugar now is less compared to last year’s, the gross tons and canes milled, however, rose by 50 percent, compared to 2019.

“We hope the balance will continue, particularly as we enter the Christmas season, which is traditionally heavy on the demand side, and as we are going to the summer months,” Yulo said.

“Even if we are in the coronavirus scenario or situation, at least agriculture has delivered to our country,” he added.

Yulo also thanked the provincial government of Antique for allowing their workers to cross to Negros Island, although they were subjected to stringent measures, such as RT-PCR tests.

Only a small percentage tested positive and all of them were asymptomatic, he also said.

The milling operation is now in full swing because of the help of migratory sugarcane workers. “It is fortunate that there is no case of Covid-19 in our sugar mills,” Yulo said, adding that sacadas who tested positive were isolated, and no communities surrounding the sugar mills were locked down.*
