246 nabbed in NegOcc anti-illegal gambling ops

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The month long anti-illegal operations in Negros Occidental, including the highly urbanized Bacolod City, has led to the arrest 246 persons, according to reports of the Police Regional Office 6.

Among the arrested suspects, a total of 205 were apprehended by the Negros Occidental Police Office and 41 others were accounted for by the Bacolod City Police Office.

The operations were the result of the order issued by PBrig. Gen. Jack Wanky, regional police director of Western Visayas, in response to widespread operations of illegal Small Town Lottery bookies, despite the presence of government-sanctioned STL operations.

‘Bookies’ is an illegal numbers game that uses winning numbers from STL draws of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).

The ‘bookies’ collectors were reported to be part of a syndicate that operates the illegal numbers game in Negros Occidental, that is based on STL results.

The anti-illegal gambling operations in Western Visayas last month led to the arrest of 391 violators, which resulted in the confiscation of P206,328 in cash bets.

NOCPPO was lauded by PRO 6 for having the most number of arrested violators at 205, followed by Iloilo City Police Office with 45 persons apprehended.

The Iloilo Police Provincial Office nabbed 17 violators, Capiz Police Provincial Office – 15, Antique PPO – 16, Aklan PPO – 17, and 11 were apprehended by Guimaras PPO.

Police chiefs were also reminded to ensure that charges were filed against the arrested illegal gambling violators.

The ICPO obtained the highest number of arrested persons, at 29 individuals in a single operation on April 20, including a policeman and a Bureau of Fire and Protection personnel.

Wanky congratulated everyone for their relentless efforts against illegal gambling.

While their performance is laudable, he still urged all police commanders across the region to increase the intensity of the anti-illegal gambling operations.

“Those who operate illegally should be continually subject of the law enforcement operations,” Wanky stressed.*
