Former farm workers of a private landholding in Bago City have finally sealed ownership to their lands with the recent distribution of the Certificates of Land Ownership Award by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in south Negros Occidental.

The 27 agrarian reform beneficiaries are now owners of the 18.0580-hectare landholding formerly owned by Carmelino Mamar, a press release from DAR said.

The landholding in Barangay Bacong, Bago was covered under compulsory acquisition of the government’s Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program.

Maria Teresa Araneta, senior agrarian reform program technologist, led the distribution of CLOAs and congratulated the new landowners, saying they are now freed from the burden of paying rentals for the use of the land, and from fear of getting ejected as tenants, the press release said.

Araneta warned the ARBs from selling their government-awarded lands because they will be disqualified as CARP beneficiaries.

“The DAR’s support to farmer-beneficiaries under CARP does not end in the distribution of lands for there are a lot of support services that can help to boost the economic lives of the beneficiaries,” Araneta said, adding that farmers must be responsible by making their lands productive and by performing their obligations under the law, including the payment of taxes and land amortization to the Land Bank of the Philippines.*
