The Department of Public Works turned over yesterday to the Bacolod City Government a new Evacuation Center and Multi-Purpose Covered Court in Brgy. Taculing, Bacolod City with an appropriation of P39.5 million.
This is the second evacuation center of Bacolod City, apart from the one in Progreso Village, Brgy. VIsta Alegre. Both are constructed on properties owned by the city.
DPWH regional director Tiburcio Canlas, Bacolod Rep. Greg Gaaataya and Mayor Evelio Leonardia led the symbolic turnover of the new facility which can accommodate about 106 households during disasters.
The permanent evacuation center features a reception area, mess hall, kitchen, laundry area, toilet and bath, basketball court, prayer room, clinic, anaerobic baffled reactor (septic vault) cistern tank, among others.
Canlas said there is a need for more evacuation centers for the city and asked the mayor to build another during his speech yesterday.
Gasataya said this facility has a new design and that its concept was made at the height of the pandemic. The awarding of the project was made in October 2020 and its construction was finished on November 2021.
He said the DPWH allocated two evacuation centers for Western Visayas and he tried to work it out to ensure that one of the projects will go to Bacolod. They will work for the establishment of another evacuation center in Bacolod and have to find a place to establish it.
He hopes that the new evacuation center will be utilized by the people of Bacolod once it is officially turned over by the DPWH to the city, he said.
Leonardia said the second evacuation center is an improvement of the first and may be used as an isolation facility for COVID-19 patients if needed. The first project will be used as an isolation facility upon the recommendation of the Emergency Operation Center and the local Inter-Agency Task Force headed by Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran.
The mayor thanked the DPWH for making the project a reality.*
