More than 300 students, faculty members, staff, and residents of Talisay City participated in the blood donation drive conducted by the Rotary Club of Bacolod-Marapara and the Technological University of the Philippines-Visayas (TUPV) Red Cross Youth, yesterday at TUPV Gymnasium.
Rotarian Jovel Young expressed that Rotary Club of Bacolod Marapara is committed in supporting the activity, emphasizing the importance of blood donation, not only as it is encouraged through the “National Blood Services Act of 1994,” but also for health reasons.
Republic Act (RA) 7719 or the “National Blood Services Act of 1994” was enacted to promote safe and efficient blood banking and transfusion practices in the Philippines through the creation of the National Voluntary Blood Services Program, thus the bloodletting activity.
In a study by the American Journal of Epidemiology, it was found that people who donated blood had an 88 percent lower risk of suffering a heart attack. That’s because donating reduces the thickness of your blood, allowing it to flow more easily through your body and reach your heart faster.
Meanwhile, RC-Bacolod Marapara President, Dr. Eric Malo-oy shared that blood donation is an act of kindness and generosity that holds the potential to save lives, adding that “a pint of blood can give someone a second chance at life, a chance to spend more time with loved ones, pursue their dreams, and contribute to society.”
He likewise urged each one to consider becoming a regular blood donor and make a difference in the lives of those in need.
