In the wake of strong insinuations and rumors that there will be a switch of positions between Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez and Representative Greg Gasataya, currently on his last term as congressman, 35 barangay captains in Bacolod City have issued an open letter urging the mayor to seek reelection during the 2025 polls.
In an open letter being circulated in the social media, the barangay captains concerned said they have information that Mayor Benitez may run for congressman in Bacolod City.
“We feel it is imperative to convey our strong belief that Bacolod City needs you to remain in your position as mayor – a role, which you have excelled and made a significant impact, in just two short years,” their open letter said.
“Under your leadership, we have witnessed remarkable progress and substantial improvements that have significantly enriched the lives of our constituents. Your unwavering commitment to the welfare of Bacolod’s citizens is commendable. Your hands-on approach and dedication have fostered a renewed spirit of collaboration among the barangays, bridging the gap, and ensuring that every voice is heard. You have not only served as our Mayor, but have also been a partner, actively walking alongside us, as we strive to uplift the lives of constituents,” it added.
Benitez is currently abroad and is expected to return to Bacolod City on October 2.
The filing of Certificate of Candidacy for the 2025 elections will be from Oct. 1 to 8.
The open letter of the Bacolod City barangay captains came out after Gasataya posted a cryptic statement on his Facebook account, which led to speculation by netizens on the switching of positions between him and Benitez.
“The strength of every society rests upon its people. This can be proudly said of our beloved city of Bacolod today as its duly elected leaders are focused on serving its people in unity and with integrity and compassion,” Gasataya said.
“‘Serbisyong May Puso’ is more than just a phrase—it is our shared commitment to serve and deliver the services which are responsive to the needs of Bacolodnons,” he added.
“Regardless of the challenges we were confronted with, Mayor Albee and Greg Gasataya stood together, worked hand in hand, and remained united in our mission as we forge ahead to elevate the lives of our citizens by prioritizing their needs above everything else,” the Bacolod solon’s social media post further said.
Atty. Caesar Distrito, Singcang Airport barangay captain and spokesman of Benitez, said the mayor has yet to make a decision.
The mayor respects all the opinions and petitions. Definitely, he will look into that. He will not totally disregard it, Distrito added.
When he makes a decision, he will not be swayed by any opinions, or any convincing. He will decide on what is the best for Bacolod, what he can do for the people of Bacolod, he also stressed.
Distrito, who did not sign the open letter, said he will support whatever the decision of Benitez.
The running mate of Benitez in the 2022 elections, Distrito issued an appeal to the public to respect whatever the decision of the mayor.
Among the five options that Benitez earlier announced is to seek reelection, accept a Cabinet post, to join the senatorial race, switch positions with Gasataya, or retire from politics.
