The Police Regional Office 6 reported yesterday that 42 violators of the Comelec gun ban had been arrested in the past three weeks in Western Visayas, yielding 35 firearms, 11 deadly weapons and 147 live ammunition as of January 29.

Of the violators, 18 were arrested by the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, which ranks number one in Western Visayas in the enforcement of gun ban. The arrests yielded 14 assorted guns, 66 live ammunition, and five deadly weapons.

PLt. Abegael Donasco, spokesperson of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, also reported that 68 unlicensed firearms were also surrendered to various city and municipal police stations in the province.

Donasco said the recent surrender of assorted firearms boosted their campaign against loose firearms at the onset of election campaign period, which will start on February 8 for candidates aspiring for national positions.

PRO 6 spokesman, PLt. Col. Arnel Solis, also reported that that the Bacolod City Police Office netted six gun ban violators, Iloilo Police Provincial Office and Antique Police Provincial Office – 5 each, two each for Capiz and Aklan PPOs and one for Guimaras Police Provincial Office, resulting in the recovery of a total of 21 guns and six deadly weapons.*
